So I'm back from Afghanistan and back from...
…and completely sick.
It started with a sore throat in Dubai on Tuesday that I chalked up to dry hotel room air.
The sore throat went away and came back in the form of a sniffly/stuffy nose on Wednesday.
Which went away and morphed into a cough on Friday.
By Saturday, I had all of the above ailments and chugged multiple bottles of DayQuil to try and mask the symptoms because I had The...
Dearest Jess,
Thank you for spending part half of your Saturday morning calling multiple Macy’s stores in Connecticut and New York and Colorado and North Carolina and California searching for the lovely potential bridesmaid dress I posted below.
Of course, I failed to check the size availability of the dress before my little heart settled on it and then realized that only sizes 10 and up were available...
I don't know what my problem is!
I whine about being here and missing my good ole American creature comforts (and my loving fiance and adorable puppy dog), but when my departure is drawing near I get all sad and weepy and want to stay another month.
Had a lovely dinner this evening at a “French bistro” (the term is used loosely for obvious reasons) in Kabul and met more interesting Afghans who, with their welcoming...

I have had it up to HERE with this place!
I realize I’m in Afghanistan and that life is unpredictable and I’m not going to have the amenities of a three star hotel in the States.
And I don’t expect that. I don’t say anything when the food turns out exactly opposite of how I have requested (they think I will like it better their way) or when my pajamas disappear from my room (they are just trying to make me happy...
What I wouldn't give for a big diner-style...
But instead, I have a little packet of instant oatmeal to satisfy my hunger.
Damn you, Afghanistan, with your No Pork and your Questionable Eggs!
Wednesday morning? You can bet I will be feasting at our favorite diner in Connecticut before heading to Rochester for Thanksgiving.
I know that we are going to be bombarded with...
So far, I have two items on my list:
A leather planner ($15)
An iPhone ($200)
Somehow, I kind of think this isn’t going to cut it.
Maybe I could just ask for a deposit into our wedding bank account?
Regarding President Karzai's inauguration tomorrow...
“Security experts and diplomats said they expect that attacks that had been planned to derail the November 7 run-off could be deferred to the inauguration.
“They’ve got everything in place, why waste it?” said one security company executive.”

OH DEAR GOD.
I wasn't kidding; Kabul really is on lockdown....
“Security forces increased patrols on some streets in the Afghan capital and blocked others entirely Wednesday, bracing for possible militant attacks during the inauguration ceremony that will cement President Hamid Karzai’s tumultuous re-election victory…
The government has declared Thursday a national holiday and has asked the public to stay home to minimize traffic on the...
We just found out that President Hamid Karzai will...
Apparently, the entire city is going to close. Roads will be closed, businesses and organizations will be closed and the airport will be closed.
We have a consultant here from New York who is not going to be happy when he finds out he can’t fly home tomorrow.
Whatever happened to planning things ahead of time, Afghanistan!?
Tonight I ate dinner in the dark at a restaurant...
Things I am Wearing Right Now:
Undies
Camisole
Short sleeved shirt
Fitted wool turtleneck sweater
Mid-thigh length cotton sweater/coat
EMS fleece
Running tights
Heavy khaki pants
Wool hiking socks
Boots
How I am Feeling Right Now:
Still. Freaking. Cold.
I will never take central heating systems for granted again.
Thanks...
for the glass idea, Simple Julie!
On second thought...
I don’t want to wear the same dress to this wedding and to my rehearsal dinner because there will be a significant overlap of people attending both. I know the two events are 9 months apart and most likely people won’t even notice, but I WILL KNOW and IT WILL BOTHER ME.
I guess I’m back to finding a “freakum” (see Alishan for definition) pair of shoes to spice up my...
Perhaps the universe is trying to tell me...
I had a very vivid dream last night that Mark and I had a baby and on our walk home from the hospital after I birthed the child, Mark dropped it in a fish pond and I left it at a restaurant, preoccupied with getting back to work that afternoon.
Things I Forgot to Pack and Why I'm Kicking...
Tweezers. I am going to have a pretty horrendous eyebrow situation going on when I return home in a few weeks.
Face moisturizer. My skin feels tight and dry and kind of ouchy.
Warm clothes. I brought my beloved EMS fleece and, um, that’s about it. I wasn’t expecting the temperatures to drop into the 30s as soon as darkness falls, so I am likely going to be shivering constantly for...
