This is a brand new school room, built by my organization. It’s a rareity that schools have desks so these first-graders are considered lucky. Four or five kids sit in each desk built for two children, all of them eager to learn.
One hundred six-year-olds attend class in this room and are taught by ONE TEACHER. In most of the schools I visited the teacher:student ratio was about 1:100. I kept asking the teachers how they did it, how they kept one hundred students focused, how they managed every day. They all just laughed and said they simply wanted a good education for their children and neighbors. Their salaries from the government are meager and I even met a few teachers who were not paid at all.
The teachers are saints.
