Apparently, the spirit of Christmas giving hates me this year.

I ordered a new, fluffy doggie bed for Ralphie from Petco and it arrived like this: with a six-inch-long hole ripped into the side. YET ANOTHER return BEFORE Christmas.

I know for many, being a bridesmaid has some negative connotations associated with it, but I LOVE this type of thing! She’s my first friend to get married, so it’s my first time being a ‘maid. Not to be cheesy, but I can’t wait to help make her special day as wonderful as she dreams!

We ate at Les Halles which I was initially excited about but the service was disappointing and the food was just okay. I’d been waiting for this dinner for months, even before we’d planned it, because I needed a good time to ask Jess to be a bridesmaid in my wedding!

We have chatted about the wedding so much over the past couple months and whenever the topic of bridesmaids came up, I almost caved and asked her over G-chat! I’m glad I waited, though, because that is ultra lame.

I LOVE Christmas ornaments, specifically sentimental, dated ones. Our tree is graced with multiple “Baby’s First Christmas, 1983” ornaments, other childhood dated-in-the 80s ones, a glass “Our First Christmas Together, 2004”, a bulb from our trip to Disney World in 2007 and many more. I just love how our past and present Christmases are included in our tree.

That being said, is this one too much? I actually think it’s adorable and might just surprise Mark with it this year (though I’m sure I care WAY more than he does about an “Engaged 2009!” Christmas ornament).

WoodWick candles are my absolute favorite. They crackle like a real fireplace, smell amazing and last forever. However, I cringe a bit at their $25-a-pop price tag because, seriously, it’s a CANDLE.

Today at Marshall’s, I stumbled upon a WoodWick for $11.

That baby is now a-cracklin’ and making the house smell wonderful. Win!

Suicide Bombing Blast Near Former VP Home In Kabul:

The bomb blast that went off this morning was right outside of the Heetal Hotel, the heavily-guarded hotel where I spent three weeks in July.

A mere two blocks from our office building, the bomb blew out most of the windows of our office, including my finance team’s office where I spent countless hours working less than a month ago.

This is horrifying because it is just too close to home. My hotel, my office…

I can’t imagine being in Kabul right now. It’s almost too much to think about.

I just went to 5 different stores around town to buy a couple Christmas presents and some stocking stuffers for Mark so I could finally knock SOMETHING, ANYTHING (well, anything EXCEPT the damn paper I’m procrastinating on) off my list.

I somehow managed to buy myself not one, but TWO pairs of (heavily discounted!) pretty suede boots.

Tall, suede, mushroom-colored BCBG boots on the left and little, suede rust(?)-colored Michael Kors booties on the right.

Yay, shopping! (Boo, paper.)

Mark loved every minute of the game. He hadn’t been to a Rangers game at MSG in years and even though they lost, he kept exclaiming how much fun he was having and what a great surprise it was.

Mission: Accomplished.

The first part of Mark’s birthday surprise on Saturday involved heading down to NYC for the day. I was initially planning on driving and letting him figure it out, probably once we hit Greenwich or so, but as we were leaving, his coat got caught on a door knob and every single one of his buttons went flying off. I directed him to get behind the wheel and drive to Manhattan while I sewed.

We headed first to Mercer Kitchen for a late lunch and it was fantastic. The place was abuzz with brunch-goers, we ordered champagne (me), bloody mary’s (him), a platter of raw oysters (OMG, YUM!) among other things and we had a great time.

I gave him his first birthday present - a NY Rangers hat he wanted. And then, just as we were about to pay (and right before I was about to burst with excitement over the surprise) I whipped an envelope out of my purse and handed it to him.

Tickets to that evening’s Rangers game. He was thrilled!

What I Have Gotten Mark for Christmas So Far:

Oh my! I just hit the mother lode of sapphire blue in this cocktail party!

Sapphire blue is the main color for our wedding reception and I audibly gasped at this photo - the blue taffeta table coverings! The blue roses in the gold cube vases! That amazing runner!
